Project Overview
As part of a multi-phase modernization effort, we led the full reconstruction of Buffalo Niagara International Airport’s primary runway, 5-23, along with associated Taxiway A. This critical infrastructure upgrade included subbase replacement, drainage improvements, electrical upgrades, pavement reconstruction, and final grooving and markings.
CHALLENGE
The project required a 60-day, 24/7 full shutdown of the main runway, demanding precise coordination among over 50 employees, 100 trucks, and 40 pieces of equipment running across two shifts to meet the tight September 30, 2024, reopening deadline.
SOLUTION
We worked closely with the FAA, airlines, cargo operations, air traffic control, and other stakeholders to minimize operational impacts. The project was strategically divided into three phases due to funding limitations, ensuring seamless execution. Proactive planning and real-time communication kept all agencies informed of critical geometry changes, taxiway renaming, and signage updates.
RESULT
With precise planning and coordination, we successfully delivered a high-quality, on-time runway reconstruction. Noteworthy success metrics include: zero recordable safety incidents, no runway incursions or unplanned disruptions, nightly closures reduced by 50%, 100% rideability with no PWL deductions, punch lists, or production losses, and completed within or under budget.
