Project Overview
The New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) modernized its 570-mile system by converting to cashless tolling, improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and enhancing environmental sustainability. As part of a design-build team, we installed steel gantries between key exits, removed old toll booths, and realigned and repaved exit/entrance ramps to facilitate non-stop travel on New York’s toll roads.
CHALLENGE
Our team faced multiple challenges, including receiving construction plans in real time, drilling foundations in winter conditions, coordinating with the design team to secure necessary approvals, and overcoming supply chain delays in procuring materials. Managing project timelines while awaiting submittal approvals required active, flexible coordination.
SOLUTION
To mitigate supply chain delays, we locked in steel prices early to ensure material availability. We partnered with a CPM scheduler to identify critical milestones and adjust workflows accordingly. This proactive planning allowed crews to accelerate work on ramp realignments and paving when gantry installations were delayed. Strong communication across teams ensured seamless coordination and progress.
RESULT
Through collaboration and strategic planning, we successfully converted NYSTA to cashless tolling in just two and a half construction seasons. Our team played a key role in implementing this statewide infrastructure upgrade, working at 32 locations over 330 miles. We are proud to have contributed to one of New York’s largest infrastructure projects.
