Project Overview

As part of the New York State Thruway Authority’s (NYSTA) statewide cashless tolling modernization, we implemented tolling technology on I-87, I-90, and the Berkshire Spur. Our work included installing steel gantries to capture E-ZPass tags and license plates, removing toll booths, and realigning and repaving exit ramps. The project reduced congestion, improved traffic flow, and enhanced the travel experience across 570 miles of New York’s toll roads.

CHALLENGE

Challenges included waiting on evolving design plans, drilling foundations in winter conditions, securing approvals, and navigating supply chain delays that impacted material procurement. Keeping the project on schedule across 32 locations required precise coordination and adaptability.

SOLUTION

To mitigate delays, we secured steel prices early, partnered with a CPM scheduler to track critical milestones, and adjusted work sequencing to maintain momentum. Our team maintained strong communication and adaptability, ensuring continued progress despite design and approval delays, winter weather, and material shortages.

RESULT

Over two and a half construction seasons, we successfully transitioned NYSTA to cashless tolling across 330 miles at 32 locations. Our team played a key role in one of New York’s largest infrastructure projects, improving efficiency and safety for motorists statewide.
