Project Overview

ln 2015, our team was retained by the 0gdensburg County Airport to extend the runway by 1,200 feet, and remove and replace their existing taxiway, including the terminal apron. By extending the runway, the Airport could support other airlines that operate larger planes. The Airport also sought to attract and increase ticket sales and traffic from New York residents, as well as Canadian customers. Additionally, a 250-car parking lot was built to support increased visitors.

CHALLENGE

Extending the runway also meant realigning State Route 68. This proved challenging, as 250,000 cubic yards of soil had to be moved. Additionally, 1,200 feet of 8- inch gas main had to be relocated which included a directional bore under an existing state road. While our project was ongoing, a large expansion project of the terminal was also happening concurrently. the terminal was also happening concurrently. Coordinating with the Airport and the other contracted teams was important to keep the project on schedule. Lastly, during the course of the work, the Airport and the other contracted teams asked if we could complete the project a month early. The incentive to complete – the project sooner had to do with the Airport bringing on a new airline and the allocation of additional funding from the FAA.

SOLUTION

To meet the advanced project deadline, the team worked through the winter, working l2-hour days. The project was completed in 11 months. Additionally, partnering with St. Lawrence Gas became imperative during the drilling phase of relocating the gas main. Fortunately, our team was able to relocate the main by digging a trench, while still keeping the project on time and on budget.

RESULT

The runway extension project was successfully completed a month early and delivered on budget. Ogdensburg Airport now offers travelers flights through Allegiant Airlines and have increased their ticket sales.
