Project Overview
The project involved clearing existing overgrowth and tree debris, repairing historic stone jetties installed in the early 1900s, and designing and constructing a new pier on one of the restored jetties. The scope included heavy stonework and the design-build construction of an asphalt pathway providing access to the new pier, enhancing both functionality and public enjoyment of the park.
CHALLENGE
This project required creative problem-solving at every turn. Working along the waterways on both sides of the jetty meant navigating extremely narrow access points while protecting the surrounding environment. Repairing the existing jetty involved carefully integrating stones of various sizes and using concrete to create a solid foundation for the new pier. At the same time, we had to design the pier and coordinate with the right subcontractors and suppliers to manufacture and deliver it. Installing the substructure from a barge added another layer of complexity, all while ensuring safe access through heavily traveled pedestrian areas. Overcoming these challenges required close collaboration, careful planning, and a solution-focused approach from the entire team.
SOLUTION
Success on this project came from collaboration, creativity, and adaptability. From the start, our team worked closely with all stakeholders to develop a solid design and approach, while remaining open to innovative, outside-the-box solutions for unexpected challenges. In the field, we made real-time adjustments through close teamwork, ensuring progress stayed on track without compromising quality. Having the right people in key roles and maintaining clear, consistent communication among all parties allowed us to turn complex challenges into a smooth, successful outcome that met both design goals and community expectations.
RESULT
The project resulted in a beautiful, functional pier that residents can enjoy in multiple ways—fishing, taking in the lake views, or watching a sunset. It has become a valued addition to Onondaga Lake Park, enhancing the recreational experience for the community and demonstrating the impact thoughtful design and skilled construction can have on public spaces.
